Food as a cause of hyperactivity

As a dog trainer I often see dogs with hyperactivity. Although puppies and adolescent dogs have higher activity levels, hyperactivity is much harder to deal with for dog owners.

Many owners come to me for advice on how to deal with their over active dogs and although some cases require behavioural training many can be dealt with by changing the food they are fed.

My first question that I ask all owners is what food they feed their dogs and not surprisingly to me many reply with popular cheap brands. I then proceed to tell them that unfortunately many of these cheap foods contain artificial flavours, preservatives and colourings to make the food more palatable and have a longer shelf life at a cheaper cost to the manufacturer.
